Humanity clings tightly to its culture. We in the
U.S. fight over our respective cultures every day;
black vs. white, straight vs. gay, Christian vs.
everyone else, etc. Hell, our independence was a
struggle between a former culture and a developing
one, and our spread across the land was the
devastation and near extinction of one culture for
the betterment and expansion of another.
Culture clash... is the forcing together of two
significantly different cultures and the ensuing back
and forth which ends in either the destruction of one
culture, or the merging of cultures, or some
combination of those outcomes.
We allow the change of culture on a microscopic level
everyday, but the proposal of intense or dramatic
change throws us into a panic.
The idea of global climate change is often perceived as the threat of cultural
upheaval. Here in the states, it would mean changing the way we do everything
from the cars we drive to the way we farm to the vast majority of our business
and personal philosophies.
Following the lives of certain individual citizens of Kiribati -- said to be the
inevitable first victims of global warming -- we will explore their differing
opinions and observe the actions some are taking to prepare themselves for what
others believe will never happen.
